Who We Are, What We Do

The Julie W. Schaffner Ovarian Cancer Fund (also known as the Julie W. Schaffner Endowment) was established in November 2011 by Thomas P. Schaffner, Julie’s husband, to honor her memory and to provide a mechanism by which colleagues, friends and loved ones can carry on her good work and channel her indomitable spirit of caring for others into perpetuity. The fund also is dedicated to fighting the good the fight against ovarian cancer.

Schaffner Ovarian Cancer Fund is administered by the Advocate Charitable Foundation, an Illinois 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation that acts as the philanthropic fiduciary for Advocate Health Care, the largest integrated health care system in Illinois and one that is recognized as one of the nation’s top 10 health care systems.

Julie's Story

Julie W. Schaffner was the Chief Operating Officer at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, a 638-bed hospital located in Park Ridge, Illinois, when she succumbed to ovarian cancer on December 31, 2010. In addition to being nationally recognized as a health care leader, she also was a loving wife and mother, a devoted daughter and sister, and a cherished neighbor and friend. She was two months shy of her 57th birthday when she lost her battle to the disease.

Julie's Career

A lifelong nurse and caregiver, Julie W. Schaffner joined the staff at Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Ill., in 1986 as Assistant Vice President, Nursing. She soon was promoted to Vice President, Nursing and for nearly two decades was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the of the hospital’s clinical, ancillary, support and nursing functions.
