First Awareness Event Is a Success

Our first Community Awareness meeting, held March 5, 2014 at the Winnetka Community House, was a great success. James Dolan, MD Gynecologic Oncology and Timothy Lestingi, MD Hematology/Oncology, both from the Advocate Medical Group and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, discussed the risk factors, early detection, and the link between ovarian and breast cancers. The presentation allowed for open dialogue between the attendees and experts and was tailored to women’s specific needs.

A survey of the 25 women who attended the event revealed that presentation was timely, on target and hit the right notes. Attendees ranked the program and its overall relevance very high — giving both and average of 6.84 points on a maximum 7 point scale. On the written comments, attendees wrote that they enjoyed the format (open questions to the doctors/panelists and that the entire session was very informative.

After the presentation, one of the attendees told Tom Schaffner, host of the event, that the information shared by the doctors was so powerful that it “literally changed my life…I’m going to pay much more attention to my health in this area from now on.”

The JWS Ovarian Cancer Fund will be hosting additional community awareness programs in the Fall 2014. Please check back on this web site for additional details.
